From the end of 2nd quarter to the beginning of Catholic Schools Week, January had a lot in store for the students at St. Mary School! The first week back to school after winter break can be a hard one, but the students at St. Mary's were back with much enthusiasm and ready to learn.
In Reading the students finished up another round of book groups and worked on individual projects based on the books they just read. There was three book groups that the students were in, and over all the students enjoyed their books. We read, Ruby Holler by Sharon Creech, Loser by Jerry Spinelli, and The Misfits by James Howe. We are now reading Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbit, one of my personal favorite books, to take a deeper look into the mystery/fantasy genre.
In Math we finished Chapter 5 where we learned how to multiply fractions, and how to calculate the area of parallelograms, triangles, and trapezoids. These were new concepts for the students and they did a fantastic job applying what they already know about area and these shapes as we learned the new material. We are now in Chapter 6 looking at fraction division, combining like terms, and evaluation algebraic expressions.
In Language Arts the students are working on writing explanatory/informative writing pieces where they will be explaining how to do or make something, or inform us on a specific subject. We are currently in the publishing phase and I look forward to reading the papers!
In Social Studies the students learned all of their state capitals, the locations of the states, what makes a country vs continents, and learned about some of the biggest countries in each continent. The students did a great job learning their capitals and state location, and they really seem to be enjoying their country/continent exploration!
As a class project we decided to make a classroom door for Valentine's day. We looked on Pinterest for some ideas and we decided on a Star Wars theme Valentine's door. The students did a great job working on the door, and it turned out GREAT!
