And just like that November has come and gone! I hope everyone had a happy Thanksgiving and enjoyed some extra time with loved ones!
Here is what the 6th grade class has been up to this November!
In Reading the kids read My Side of the Mountain. My Side of the Mountain is a 1959 book by Jean Craighead George. It is set in the Catskill Mountains near Delhi, New York. My Side of the Mountain tells the fictional account of how Sam Gribley survives in the wilderness of upstate New York. Sam runs away from his home in New York City in the month of May. He leaves with only a penknife, a ball of cord, an ax, $40 which he had saved selling magazine subscriptions, and a flint and steel set which he had purchased at a store in the city. When the students were done reading the book they selected a project to complete on the book. The students seemed to enjoy working on the projects they selected for the assignment.
In Language Arts the 6th graders published a narrative writing piece, and they all did very well! We have some creative minds in 6th grade and some talented writers!
We began Social Studies with 2nd quarter where we have been learning about early civilations, such as Babylon and Assyria. We began to look at the Fertile Crescent, and we will be exploring this topic in more depth as we begin learning about Egypt in chapter 3.
In Math we have been working with variables, writing expressions, generalization, and now ratios. We begin looking at ratios by enlarging a mystery mascot. The students were each assigned 5 pictures that they needed to enlarge, once all of the students drew their enlargements they were challenged with the task of putting the whole thing together. The students did an amazing job with their enlargements, and did a really great job putting the whole thing together!
