It's hard to believe that it October is already over, as well as the 1st quarter of school! We have been very busy throughout October in 6th grade, let's take a look at what we have been doing!
In Reading we finished "Freak the Mighty" and completed a project on the book. Kevin is brilliant, but his body is so crippled by birth defects that he has to wear braces on his legs. Max is huge and powerful, but he has been so scarred by life that he feels dumb and worthless. Independently, each boy seems like half a person, but when they meet the summer before eighth grade starts, they join together, becoming inseparable friends as Freak the Mighty. Once we finished the book the students selected a project they wanted to complete, most students decided to to a "Story Map" showing the important events of the story. One student wrote an "ABC Freak the Mighty" book, all of the projects were awesome, and our class really enjoyed reading this book!

In Language Arts we started writing our narratives. The students are writing a real-life experience they had, or an imaginary story using all of the features of a narrative that we have been talking about since the beginning of the year. The students have been doing a great job writing their narratives, and I look forward to reading them!
In Science we have just concluded our Sun, Earth, Moon System Einstein Kit. We learned a lot about the relationships of these celestial bodies, and how their interactions affect us on Earth. The students had a group project to do on "spin-offs". Spin-off are things that were made for astronauts in space, or space discovery, but have been modified for the purpose of use on Earth. Some examples are memory foam, fire alarms, etc. The students did a great job breaking this project into sections so each person did their share of the work. This project has been an ongoing project throughout October, when we were not working on the project we did several experiments, such as how the distance of Earth from the Sun effects energy using a radiometer.

In Math we are discovering how fractions, decimals, and percents are related, and how we can display the information in both words and diagrams. We are also working more with fractions to solidify our understanding of fractions. Friday, October 28 we had our school wide Halloween Party. There were a lot of awesome costumes, and the kids enjoyed some treats and fun! Quarter 1 ends on Tuesday, November 8, and report cards go home on Thursday, November 17. |
