School is back in session at St. Mary's! From picture day, to the Fun & Fit walk, to learning new concepts, September has been very busy here at St. Mary's.
Wednesday, September 14, was our annual Fun & Fit walk! It was a beautiful day for a walk, and the students seemed to have a lot of fun. Our route was changed a bit due to construction, but we all had a great time getting out and exercising in the crisp, fall air! Once we got back to parish hall, we had some wonderful volunteers go over some nutritional information with the students, and the students at St. Mary's were anxious to share what they know about nutrition, there was a lot of excitement in the room!

Of course we have been having fun outside of the classroom, but we have been having a lot of fun in the classroom, too!
In reading, we are doing a class read aloud and learning about plot structure, author's purpose, and making connections to the books we read. Our class read aloud is, Freak the Mighty by Rodman Philbrick. Freak the Mighty is about two boys who come together and become best friends, and together they are unstoppable. The students are really enjoying this book!
In science, we are investigating the Sun, Earth, Moon system and learning about about our own planet through science inquiries. We have discovered the reason for seasons, used a model to look at moon phases, used demonstrations to look at how the Earth's tilt and position on its axis affects shadows in the summer, fall, winter, and spring.
In writing, we have been working on various grammar concepts such as subjects, predicates, combining subjects and predicates to make compound sentences, etc. We will soon be gearing up to write narratives!
In math we have been looking at patterns, displays of information, perimeter vs. area, and we are now getting a little more in depth with graphs. We are working with stem and leaf plots for the first time in chapter 2, and we are getting ourselves familiar with histograms ans what makes them different from bar graphs, and we are getting a better understanding of bar graphs and dot plots.
